ACMER P2 Laser Engraver
I'm currently in process of working with and getting to know the P2 a bit better, and running it through various projects and tests.
I really can't justify doing a full review until after I have a good number of hours under the belt with it but I will point out a few of these observations so far. unpackaging and the few minutes of minor assembly went very fast and without any issues.
It was packaged very well, and the instructions although basic are pretty straightforward and nicely, right to the point. I was up and running with it in about 10 minutes and half of that was me stopping for a sip of coffee.
The machine is put together very well with quality components as far as I can tell and only sometime will determine how well things are going to hold up. it's looking really good though folks.
I'm going to make some suggestions though that I will elaborate further on in a engineering article devoted specifically to some of these things, but for someone reading this right at the moment I want to stress checking and double checking the heights of your possible hold downs that you use for the materials.
I've noticed this with other similar lasers on the market, the housing at the base of the head in relation to the focal points for these lasers leaves only about 2 mm or less between the bottom of that housing and the material which when the machine is working around the perimeters of your material it's easy to catch on and cause a jam or move the material which of course is a unwanted scenario. They really need to think about raising the base of that housing up another couple of millimeters and that should solve just about any of those issues. Other lasers on the market don't even have this cowl at all so you don't have a whole lot of worries about it running into your hold downs.
The logic I suppose behind these cowls is to minimize the amount of laser exposure and to some degree minimize particulate and smoke movement. it's a trade-off necessary for better operation and most definitely decreasing the possibility of a bad cutting or etching operation ruining material because of that.
Additionally, and it is very minor, but I did notice when using the spring-loaded adjustment lever for setting the focal point of the laser, if you are not careful there is just enough play in this locking system to allow a little bit of an angle if you apply too much pressure on the laser head. I'm not really sure how much of a difference this is going to make but honestly I think this could be solved with a second spring loaded adjustment foot on the left hand side to make sure that the head remains even.
